Who are We?

St. Alkmund’s Church Choir is based in Whitchurch Shropshire and is made up of two choirs, a Junior Choir between the ages of 7 to 16 of around 30 members and an Adult Choir of around 25 members. The choir not only sings for services in Whitchurch each Sunday before also has an active outreach music programme such as workshops, courses, open rehearsals, alongside fostering links with local schools and organizations. We have just launched a Young Persons Choral Training Experience for the Junior Choir.

What do we do?

The choir is one of the few performing groups in the area and performs an important local community arts provider. The choir has recently performed on BBC Radio Shropshire, sung at the 600th Anniversary of the Battle of Shrewsbury (July 2003), and sung in Chester Cathedral.

2004 will see it taking part in the Whitchurch Arts Festival (March 2004) putting on a concert for an English Summer (July 2004), and singing in an RSCM Choral Festival in October 2004. The choir provides access to RSCM courses, Grace Notes events and the British Association of Choral Directors. The choir has developed close links with local schools and other churches in the area.

Each year the choir takes part in a Choral Festival in Chester (November), it also sings at Christmas time at St. Eata’s Church Atcham, near Shrewsbury and during the Summer (July) sings Choral Evensong (BCP) at Battlefield church on the site of the Battle of Shrewsbury.

The Choir meets on a Wednesday evening from 7-00pm and sing a wide range of music to a high standard. Such as Allegri’s ‘Miserere’, Byrd’s ‘Ave Verum’, Karl Jenkins’s ‘Mass for Peace’, Haydn’s ‘St. Nicholas Mass’, Rachmaniov’s ‘Ave Maria’, Russian Orthodox Chants, Plainchant such as the Lent & Advent Prose and music by Purcell, Gibbons, Elgar, Stanford, Mozart and Ireland.

How to Join…

Come and have a relaxed hour enjoying some of the finest choral music, making music in an inactive and fun way. We take all applicants; enjoyment of singing is all you need. The choir is informal and sings to a high standard with a varied and stimulating repertoire. Come to any of our rehearsals to join or just to have a look and listen, the rehearsal offers a fantastic opportunity to get to the heart of the choir and to see it in action.
